Fall Mantle Photography

I have been working on putting together my fall "mantle", which is really a shelf in the dining room, because I don't have the luxury of having a fireplace.  At the end of the day mantles are just shelves, right? I started with my fall wreath (a huge improvement from last year's fall wreath). Obviously, we have a long way to go before this shelf reads fall. I decided it was time to find something fall-ish for the frames. When Ross came home from work on Thursday, I was all, "Hurry up and change. We have to drive out towards the country and take pictures while the lighting is still ...

Making the Most of What You Got

It is no secret that we don't have lots of money. I am not telling you this in a woe-is-me kinda way. Our money situation is largely due to the choices we have made. Getting married at 23, buying our house at 24, having our first kid at 25, taking a year off to stay home with Quinn, having a second kid and forfeiting my income so I could stay home with our children...yup, those are all choices. Choices we stand by. If money and career were number one, we probably would have had our kids later in life and I wouldn't have given up my job. When I made the choice to be a stay-at-home mom, it meant ...

Burlap & Fabric Flower Wreath

I know, I know...it is only August. But fall is right around the corner so I thought I would get started now. The burlap & fabric flower wreath is the first step to attaining my "fall mantle". We are using air quotes (If we really were talking, those would be air quotes), because it isn't actually a mantle. I don't actually have a fireplace, but a board from Home Depot does the trick. Click on over to learn a tad more about the dining room shelf (a.k.a mantle). Nothing says fall to me like burlap and shades of orange. I wanted something simple and flexible. Early fall, Halloween, ...

Five Ways to Make Back To School Fun & Memorable

Back to School Questionnaire Printable http://www.balancinghome.com

Quinn will be starting preschool this fall. It is absolutely impossible for me to comprehend where the time has gone. He will only be going two days a week. With me being a stay-at-home-mom and him having a little sister at home I want him to connect with, this seemed like the best choice for our family. Even though it is only two days, make no mistake, it is crucial. As a teacher, I know how important attitude, both of the child and the parent, is to a child's learning and self-esteem. I want to do everything in my power to make sure my children have positive associations with school. I ...

Summer To Do List: Fly A Kite

Slowly, but surely we are checking things off of our summer to do list. You can see our first summer to do list post here. Our latest summer to do activity: flying a kite. Did you spy the grasshopper? All in all flying the kite was a success. Next time I am getting a fabric kite, though. This one just didn't hold up the way I would have liked. So far we have completed: a trip to Chicago where we visited the Shedd Aquarium (Haven't blogged about it yet), sleepover, Swimming at Grandmas and sparklers, the water fountain, water balloon fight, church ...
