Finding affordable flooring solutions for your home can be really difficult. These Home Depot carpet tiles fit the bill and now I am breaking down everything about why we chose carpet tiles, how to install carpet tiles and how these Home Depot carpet tiles are holding up FIVE years later!
The room with the carpet problem
With a new baby on the way, 8 weeks away (eek!), we have been busy moving Eleanor out of the nursery across the hall from us and up to her big girl room, complete with big girl bed. A little prayer that this transition goes smoothly please? Momma needs her sleep.
If you read about Eleanor’s room progress, you know that this upstairs room has become a catch all and Quinn referred to it as the “dangerous room”. We cleaned the room out only to find the carpet was in worse shape then we remembered.
The carpet was stained, dingy and worst of all ripped. The cat had scratched up sections, including one spot by the door that even left the carpet tack exposed.
We knew we needed an affordable flooring solution, preferably one we could quickly DIY and one that wouldn’t leave us back in the same predicament again.
Why we decided to install carpet tile
We weren’t sure what to do with the flooring and then one of my fabulous Facebook fans suggested carpet tile. I have the best readers! I loved the idea and here is why.
- If this happens again, I am out a carpet tile or two, not the whole room!
- It is a kid’s room so once again, replaceable carpet tiles have their appeal.
- It is easy to DIY.
- There are no hidden costs. Sometimes you price out flooring and you are like, that isn’t too bad. Then you have to add in padding, underlayment, grout, etc. and bam! an extra $500.
Home Depot Carpet tile + Pricing
We ordered the carpet tile from Home Depot. It is called Simply Seamless Tranquility Sunset 24 in. x 24 in. Carpet Tile (10 Tiles/Case). It comes out to $1.99/sq. ft. They came pretty quick and luckily I loved them. I ordered them without seeing a sample or anything. Just crossed my fingers it would all work out.
The carpet squares arrive like this. They come with padding, but it is nothing luxurious. I’m happy with it, but if you are looking for something seriously plush, not for you. We were looking for something pretty, durable and affordable.
How to install carpet tile
We had already torn up all the carpet and padding. That made painting the room and trim super easy. All that was left to do was sweep and vacuum up the space.
Umm…yeah, those are his “work clothes”. For years now, this is what he has thrown on when he paints or whatever. Can you tell?
These are peel and stick carpet tiles. Each tile has a plastic backing you peel off.
Then you have a giant sticker, more or less. There are pretty much two rules.
- All the arrows on the back face the same way.
- Try to butt those carpet tiles up to each other nice and tight.
We started in this corner.
Then we just worked are way across the room. You need a utility knife or carpet knife to cut your tiles if you need to fit around a groove or something. The carpet tiles cut really nicely. The last DIY carpet we did had a lot of fraying when we would cut.
How carpet Tiles look installed
I tried to get as many angles of the carpet as I could so you could get an idea of what to expect. Yes, you can see seams. Are they super obvious? Not at all. I am not trying to pretend they aren’t carpet tiles so I am cool with that.
The photos were after I vacuumed, of course. The whole process probably took about two and a half hours. Cutting around some nooks and crannies was by far the most time consuming part. Would I buy these again? Yes. Am I happy with them? Yes.
If you want to keep tabs on Eleanor’s big girl room you can check out the progress post and her reading nook post. Here is quick peek at that reading nook.
So there you have it folks, everything you ever needed to know about carpet squares.
Have you tried carpet squares? Would you try carpet squares? What kind of projects are you working on?
How have the carpet tiles held up?
Five years after these Home Depot carpet tiles were installed, I’m here with the follow up.
The good news is these carpet tiles have held up great. As we predicted, the cat has continued to scratch at the door, which isn’t as big of deal now that we can replace the affected carpet tile with great ease.
We haven’t noticed and carpet fraying or loose carpet tiles in this bedroom (except the one at the door the cat scratches at).
The carpet cleans nicely. The color seems to have held true and it still looks vibrant today.
I would highly recommend these carpet tiles for an affordable flooring solution, especially in a child’s room. At the end of the day, there is so much versatility when using carpet squares.
