I’ve been there. The holidays are coming and you want to be festive, but you are tight on money and you aren’t even sure how to pull it off with kids in the home.

The thing is, the excitement of the holidays comes from seeing it through your kids eyes and being festive doesn’t have to cost a ton.

I can’t think of a better way to decorate your home for the holidays or celebrate your time together.

Don’t Overlook the Basics

You would be surprised at how far some of the most basic craft supplies can get you. You can create quite the magical place with glue, construction paper, scissors and a stapler.

Cut paper strips to link together to make paper garland and cut snowflakes and cluster them. You can check out, what I affectionately call “kindergarten chic” here.

Use white paper bags to create these poinsettia flowers for quite the wall statement. And then go ahead and fill frames with fun wrapping paper. Learn more about this look here.

When we decorate and celebrate with the things we create, we are collecting moments.

Make your own ornaments! There are so many ways to do it.

Learn how to make these marbled clay monogram ornaments here.

Or these photo diorama Christmas ornaments.

Remember what I told you about colored paper, scissors and glue? Try these Christmas tree crafts.

A Christmas Tree bar with tons of fun fixings to glue on to their tree is fun and they make for adorable Christmas decorations.

Looking for something a little more modern? Try this Christmas tree art.

Take Advantage of Free Printables!

Free printables are such an easy way to create a festive home on a tight budget.

Put together an entire gallery wall with these printables. You could even hang them with washi tape and it would be totally adorable and affordable.

Love baking? Making Christmas cookies is one of the oldest traditions and such a great one for kids to participate in. Grab these free printables to make it a festive event.

Give Chalkboards Some Love

I absolutely love chalkboards. Maybe it is the teacher in me. And guess what? Kids love them too!

They make great decor as well, because you can easily change them up. Check out this chalkboard fireplace. Have you ever seen a more kid-friendly fireplace ;)?

Just Breathe & Make a Plan

Don’t freak out and feel like you have to do it all today or all this year. Pick and choose what works for you and your family.

To take a break from the stress, create a plan. Block off an hour or two one afternoon to cut out snowflakes and drink hot chocolate.

Put it on the calendar and treat it like a doctor’s appointment or anything else. I promise, you will feel instant relief. Gone is the panicked feeling.

You aren’t reacting to the holidays, you are actively participating in them and enjoying them with your family.

The coolest thing about it is, if that is the only thing you manage, your kids will forever talk about the time you drank hot chocolate and cut out snowflakes.

What are you putting on the schedule this holiday season?
