My last baby turned one and my first baby turned eight two weeks apart from each other. With all the fall activities, including half of my family being out of town for a weekend for a wedding, I was left with one weekend and a joint party was born. I certainly didn’t want either kid to feel like they weren’t represented and I struggled a bit before landing on knights and princess birthday party.
For Quinn’s birthday weekend we got away to a water park as a family knowing we would have a joint birthday party later in the month. The best of both worlds. Now Eleanor and Hudson want to share a party (their birthdays are less than a month apart) and do a water park trip. At the end of the day, buying food/party stuff once saves us money and makes a waterpark adventure possible. We get to get away as a family and celebrate with our bigger family. Win-win!
The first thing I want you to know is I love decorating for my kids birthday. It is fun for me and it makes them feel special. Even still, I like to keep things on a budget.
The idea for the knights and princess themed party came while perusing TJ Maxx where I found this fun castle cupcake stand. It came with Disney themed princesses which I know would be perfect for Eleanor come May. Anything that can do double duty is a win in my book!
Then came the vision of the castle. The castle ran me about $12 and the pink doilies another $3 (thank you half off coupon). So 15 dollars total.
The castle is literally poster board taped to the wall. Two rows of four posted vertically. The towers have an additional half of a poster board along with a silver poster board cut to a triangle for the tower roof. The leftover half of black posterboard was used to make a strip of cutouts along the top of the center of the castle. And then leftovers were used for the birthday sign and knights/princess signs on each tower. The last step is just using a white marker to draw your castle decor.
I hand lettered the happy birthday sign, which was fun for me because I’m really into hand lettering.
I wanted the kids to decorate shields, but couldn’t find any. So I bought cardboard cake circles from Michaels and we made duct tape handles. My mom found the swords at the dollar store and I picked up the crowns and wands to decorate from the craft store. They made for fun favors/activities for the kids.
Fiona took a while to figure out what the cupcake was about, but once she did….
Fiona really enjoyed her party. She loved all of her gifts. It surprised me to see how much she enjoyed each one. She got this bouncy horse that she opened all of her gifts from.
Parties around here are mostly family, but Quinn’s neighborhood friend came and his day was made. It is so hard to believe that she is one and he is eight.
Fiona is saying words, cruising, climbing and clapping. She is still smiley and easy going. She loves books and being read to.
Quinn continues to grow and amaze me daily. He loves school, sports and reading. He loves being a big brother to Fiona. I love my little bookends.
