Front Closet Organization + Storing Kid Junk

Kid junk has taken over my house. For real. My children don’t want to go upstairs and play in their room, they want to play downstairs. Even worse, they drag down so much from upstairs. I have tried to keep the basics on hand so that clean up is easier and everyone is happy. The basket on the left had been storing board games.

There were a few problems with this approach. One being that the games were too easily accessible. Yes, too easy. Eleanor, who is 2 thought it was fun to pull them out and pretty soon every piece of every game was all over and the cards were all bent. The other problem was that every time Quinn wanted a game, he would take out all the games looking for the game he wanted. It was time for the board games to be relocated.

I picked up these Rubbermaid All Access Organizers from Home Depot. They come in two sizes, I got the larger size.

As you can see, Quinn can easily tell what is in the bin, open it by himself, grab the game he wants without emptying the whole bin and we can even stack more bins on top. GENIUS!

These bins are actually living in our front entryway. While most people probably stick to coats and shoes, we have all sorts of goodness.

I now have a hidden drop spot for the diaper bag. YIPEE! I already showed you the Rubbermaid All Access Organizers. Aside from the diaper bag drop spot, we store the Skylanders in what actually is a filing bin on top of the Rubbermaid organizers. Then you have the obvious shoes, coats and hoodies. Up on top are the family bins. There are 4 in order for youngest to oldest: Eleanor, Quinn, Me & Ross. Eventually Hudson will need a bin. The bins are for baseball caps, hats, mittens, etc.

There are some things I found I was always running around looking for. One of those was Play Doh. The kids love Play Doh and I found I was getting it out a lot. Now that we have a brand new baby and I am a nursing mom, I need these kinds of things close by and accessible. Grab bin from front closet, set on kitchen table, watch kids go crazy with Play Doh while I feed Hudson from the couch. Perfection.

Same goes for the art bin. I was constantly running around looking for stuff to do projects with. Now the bin is full of construction paper, pipe cleaners, glue, markers, googly eyes, stickers, watercolors, stamps, etc. This way the kids can get creative with limited fuss. When we are done—I just throw it back in the bin and back in the closet.

I am so thankful I finally found a solution to storing some of the kid junk. It seems like a never-ending battle around here. Anyone else? What are your tricks to storing kid junk?
