Let me start by saying I have never successfully stenciled anything. I see beautifully stenciled things and wonder, HOW DID THEY DO THAT? Making the decision to stencil my drapes was a big one! I was really nervous, but I knew I wanted some bold curtains and this was the most affordable option. When I looked into stenciling one name in the blog world kept coming up over and over again. That was Cutting Edge Stencils. I am in love with the results.
I feel like they completely finish off the space. Best. Decision. Ever. If it turns out you all have lots of questions I might do a more detailed post. Here are the deets on our stenciled drape adventure.
We started by rolling out some old wrapping paper and taping it to the floor using painters tape. Then we put the curtain panel down on the wrapping paper and smoothed it all out. We put down our stencil, held it down with four kitchen cups (classy, I know). I used the Nadya Damask Stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils, Tulip Fabric Paint (not puffy paint) and Cutting Edge Stencils Roller (I highly recommend. HIGHLY). For those of you who are wondering, our drapes are cotton sailcloth type from Walmart (You know, like $9.99).
The trick is to not put too much paint on your roller and to use quite a bit of muscle (pressure) when rolling. The stencil has a portion of the other parts on it. This means you just line it up with the already painted part and stencil away. As long as you lay it out well the first time you will be golden. I was shocked to see that you could lift the stencil right away and even overlap without smudging or anything.
We used about one bottle of paint (smallish, craft size bottles) per a curtain and each curtain took about an hour. We would rock one out during nap time or while the kids were sleeping and managed to finish them all in one weekend. Part of the reason we did one curtain at a time was by the time we were finished there was a lot of build up and the stencil had to be cleaned anyways.
Shhh…don’t tell the husband, but I plan on doing the dining room curtains now too! In fact Ross did three panels and I did three panels. It was a team effort.
If you are considering stenciling I HIGHLY recommend using a Cutting Edge Stencil and roller. Obviously, I am very happy with my results. To be sure one of you gets to do just that, Cutting Edge Stencils is kindly giving away a $50 credit to their store!
