The sun is setting, there is a cool breeze coming through the front door. The birds are chirping, a sure sign that spring is here. Eleanor is napping. I can hear Quinn giggling as he plays with his dad in the backyard and I am drinking a Blue Moon (don’t judge) and whipping out a blog post. We spent the day at the park and grabbed lunch with friends. Life is good!
I said good, not perfect. Yes, my house is a disgusting disaster. Not in the way skinny people say, “I’m so fat” when they clearly aren’t. My house is a disaster like piles of unpacked bags, a counter top over-flowing with dirty dishes, bananas hardened to the high chair tray. I mean I feel like I could be in one of those reality T.V. shows right now. I keep waiting for the motivation to kick in. It hasn’t. All other craft and DIY projects will have to wait until said disaster is cleaned up.
Today’s post is actually about the 500 wedding favors my mom, sister and I cranked out last week. This was my mom’s idea and she gathered all the supplies. We did it at my house, since I am kind of an on-call food source to some little girl I know. I love the way they turned out. We did them all in an evening and it went by pretty quick. We got a system down and had lots of time to chit chat.
So here is the low down on our chocolate covered pretzel adventure. For starters you will need pretzel rods. The melting chocolate, sprinkles and pretzel bags can all be found at Micheal’s or Hobby Lobby (or whatever craft store you shop). My sister received a double boiler for a wedding shower gift so we used hers. We, however do not have one, so we just plopped a bowl on top of a pot and called it a day. Works like a charm!
I know we used these as wedding favors, but these would actually be adorable for a bake sale, a kid’s party or anywhere else you need a snazzy affordable treat.
Here is how we rocked these out. We started by boiling water. Then we put the chocolates in a bowl over the water. We took it off the heat and stirred continuously. When the chocolate was melted we got down a little system. We would use a spatula to scoop up some gooey chocolate goodness and then we would kind of just spin the pretzel rod around the spatula. Hard to describe, hope pictures help.
After they are all covered in chocolatey goodness you put the sprinkles on. You can choose all sorts of different colors of chocolate and sprinkles to make them fit your event. My sister and I were doing the chocolate covering and my mom was doing the sprinkling. I think doing this would work best with a minimum of two people working, one for chocolate and one for sprinkles. Then you set them out on wax paper to dry/harden.
In case you are wondering how long they take to be ready for packaging…I don’t know. I didn’t time it, but I do know that we made them and packaged them all in one evening. So, not that long.
